International Washer Pitchin' Contest
August 18th, 2007
Yorkville, Tn

For the last nine years on the third Saturday in August, the small town of Yorkville is host to one of the truly unique events in Tennessee, The International Washer Pitchin' Contest.

Local man Jim Turner came up with the idea, seeing that every town has it's own yearly festival or event and since washers were played by many people in the community. Thus, the International Washer Pitchin' Contest was born.

What makes this tournament so unique is it's goal. It's not designed to bring fame and fortune to the victors.  The winners will bring home a nice trophy and the feeling of being the best washer pitchers around, but that's about it. The goal of the contest is, in the words of the organizers, "To exemplify courtesy, sportsmanship, fairplay and good-hearted fun in a country sort of way". Now there's a good reason to hold an event.

In an age when professional athletes are haggling over hundreds of millions of dollars, it's nice to have a contest that is more about the fun than the money.

You always hear that it's not whether you win or lose, but how you play the game. Well, here's one event that really means it.

The contest will be held at the City Park. If you can find Yorkville, then finding the washer tournament shouldn't be a problem, just look for all the cars. In case you're the first one there, just stop and ask someone. They'll be glad to help.

Just in case you are traveling in from some far off land and need to know where Yorkville is...Go Here and type in Yorkville, Tn as the destination.

The Southeast Tourism Society has awarded the IWPC  a "Top
20" tourism location for the southeast. Ranks the International Washer Pitchin'  contest right there with Memphis in May Bar B Q and others of note

A little history of Washer Pitchin' (courtesy of the International Washer Pitchers)
Many folks inquire about the history of this fine sport. We're not sure just how long this game has been around. Men and boys have been throwing stuff for a long time so it's hard to put an exact date on something of this nature. The fame dates back at least to the time when Davy Crockett lived in this area. It is rumored that Davy moved to Texas over a game of Washer Pitchin'. So the story goes, Davy, in a moment of frustration bet his farm on the outcome of a game and lost. Pride got the better of him and Davy moved to Texas to escape the humiliation.

The course will consist of 2 holes 20 feet apart from center to center. The holes will be 4 inches diameter, 3 to 3 1/2 inches deep. The washers will be 2 inches in diameter. The pitch line will be an imaginary line perpendicular with the backside of each hole. A player's back foot must remain behind the pitch line in contact with the ground on a pitch.

Inbounds will be an area with a 18 inch radius from center of hole. Washers landing out of bounds will be out of play on that pitch. There will be no spitting within 5 feet of holes. Each player has 60 seconds to pitch his/her 4 washers.

A washer pitchin' team competing for the INTERNATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP must have 2 players above the age of 12 years old. A junior tournament will be held for 12 and under players. The contest must be played in Yorkville, Tn.

Entry fees are:
$7.00 for singles
$14.00 for doubles

Fees must be paid in U.S. funds only. Since this is an international event they wanted to make that clear. So don't be coming to pay with your lira, drachmas, etc. Good old American Dollars are the currency of choice.

Scoring:
5 points for in the hole (washer touching bottom of hole)

1 point on closest washer or washers.

If red and yellow each has a washer in hole, they cover or cancel each other. Neither team scores a  5 pointer.

Maximum score per pitch would be a "QUAD" (4 washers same color in hole not covered) scores 21 points or game.

Minimum point of 1 per pitch.

The team that scores will pitch first on next round.

Pitches will be made underhanded.

There will be no stickum, no gloves or grease allowed. Bare handed only.

Due to their consistent size, thickness and weight, we use and recommend Lawson brand washers. (3/4 inch)

Come and experience the Int'l Washer Pitchin' Contest. "Good hearted fun in a country sort of way."
