Tornados Rip Dyersburg
May 4th, 2003

In one of the worst storms Dyersburg has ever seen, a series of tornados ripped through the city Sunday night May the 4th, 2003. A devastating trail of debris started in south Dyersburg and continued straight through the center of town.

Earlier reports had listed one person as dead. But, it now seems that despite the major damage, no lives were lost.

Other areas hit in Dyer County included Finley, Newbern and many of the outlying areas. Major buildings hit in the city included the Polyone plant, Dyersburg High School, Dyersburg State Community College and Ermco.

It's hard to say where the most damage was done, but the residential area north of the Polyone plant saw some major damage. In an area that is heavily populated, it is a miracle that no one was killed.

It was in that area that we found one of the most amazing stories from the storm. On the south end of Lake Road near the Shortstop convenience store, Elsa Tatum and her son Emanuel were in a small closet located in the center of their house. As they crouched there in wait, their roof was completely ripped off and tossed a couple hundred yards, landing on top of the already damaged Shortstop store. Despite the fact that half the house was taken away along with the roof, Elsa and her son survived without major injuries. Her son did receive a laceration in the rescue effort that required some stitches.

The house was in shambles and the closet they were in was the only piece left fully intact. If they would have been anywhere else in that house there would have been no way to survive. For some incredible photos of this house...visit this page.

The storm that hit Dyersburg was an incredible show of force. But, the city of Jackson suffered an even worse fate that night. An F4 tornado went through the middle of Jackson and claimed at least 11 lives, as of this posting. Our hearts and prayers go out to all of those who lost loved ones in this terrible storm.

One of the interesting things we encountered while touring the city was the lack of talk about loss of property. It seems that no one was even considering the financial impact that this might have on them. They were just thankful they're alive.
